Academic Decathlon: Regionals
By: Madeline Patrick
On Saturday the 23rd of January, North High School competed in the Academic Decathlon regionals competition at Lake Catholic High School in Mentor. Ms. Slack told “The Searchlight” exclusively, “I’m enjoying this year’s theme of India because there is so much I am learning. I’m enjoying this team. They are all very open and interested in learning. They are very dedicated.”
After a morning of speeches and interviews, eight students took a quiz along with the other schools in front of everyone with the scores being shouted out after each round. However, North did better than expected and even beat NDCL.
After the super quiz, there was a speech showcase and an awards ceremony. Rachel Bergeron, a senior here at North, was chosen to give her speech at the award ceremony along with five other students. She was also awarded the bronze medal in the Honors category of speech, and a medal for the best scores out of the North students. Despite the buttering of her name, Rachel kept a great spirit. When asked for a quote, Rachel only said, “Bergeron, not Bergoon.”
Ms. Slack and Mrs. Gray were proud of those who won medals. Tessa Colo in 11th grade won multiple medals for our varsity team. She said, “This was a very nerve racking experience, but a good experience.” Ravi Patel, who won a medal in the mathematics category for the honors team, told us, “[It] was a good experience and I met a lot of new, interesting people.” Frankie Collins won a silver medal in Honors for her Interview, “winning a silver medal for the interview was amazing since it was just a conversation about my favorite thing: space. I knew mine went well, but I wasn’t expecting to win at all.”
If you would like to support your fellow classmates, States will be held Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12 at John Carrol.
