A.L.I.C.E is a safety procedure being implemented by schools worldwide. The acronym stands for Alert-Lockdown-Inform-Counter-Evacuate. This advocates the process of trying to unarm the shooter or intruder and getting out of the area. The two question being asked are should we really be teaching our young kids to throw things at armed men? Will this really help or benefit our children in a situation like this?
I sat down with our principle to first learn her view on A.L.I.C.E. When I asked Mrs.Chauby her opinion on it she said of course she supports this. Her reason being her sons were at Chardon during the shooting back in 2012. She feels like if something similar to A.L.I.C.E had been around she would have felt a lot less stressed about her son’s safety.
Although there was a mostly positive response from parents on the training that took place at north on October 7th some had different views on it. I talked to one parent about their opinion on the method. They felt “it puts kids in more danger”. Words like “confusion” and “no order” were used to explain what would happen if this method was used.
Parents and students who agree with the plan would want to fight back and retaliate in a situation where A.L.I.C.E would be used. Parents and students who disagree with the method said they would want to hide if possible, assess the situation, and listen to teacher or whoever is in charge.
Overall the most parents and students find this effective. Parents would rather have their kids fight back then do nothing. The methods used now are not effective so parents agree with something that could save kids’ lives.
