As many people may know, one of the most important days of the season is coming up in just a few weeks; Black Friday. Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the entire year. It takes place country-wide on the Friday after Thanksgiving, this year being on November 27th. Many stores have even began opening their doors on Thanksgiving night, to account for the competition between other stores.
However, this year many stores have decided to take a completely different route to the madness of black Friday. A few stores around the country are closing their doors completely. This all started when REI, the outdoor equipment store, announced the #optoutside movement, opting out of Black Friday completely. This is a movement to get more people to go do something outside, rather than going shopping. Other stores, including TJ Maxx and Gamestop, have begun to follow in the footsteps of REI by choosing to stay closed through Thanksgiving night.
Black Friday is a very important part of the season. It marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Many people may even say that Black Friday is a family tradition. Some people even believe that they must go shopping simply because it is Black Friday. However, this is not the case. So by taking this stand against Corporate America, what will be the larger effects or consequences of this decision? Will other stores follow by this example, or will REI simply stand alone on this movement?
