One of the bright
spots of the very (very, very, very, very…) dark times the Cleveland Browns
have been through since coming back into the league in 1999 has been Josh
Gordon. Debuting in 2012, Gordon has become known as one of the NFL’s top
receivers. In 2013, he led the NFL in receiving yards with 1,648 yards, and
caught 9 touchdowns. He has also become known as one of the NFL’s biggest
screw-ups. Gordon was suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season
(which makes those league-leading numbers more impressive, but still) for
violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, and was then suspended for the
entire 2014 season after another violation, but was reduced to just ten games.
Gordon was also suspended for the last game of the season by the Browns for
violating team rules (he missed practice because he was out partying with
Johnny Manziel).
Now, Gordon is going to miss the entire 2015 season because he (big surprise) violated his probation and drank alcohol. He had entered the NFL’s substance abuse program after being charged with driving while impaired. As a result, he wasn’t supposed to have and alcohol, but since he’s Josh Gordon, he did it anyway. Gordon has become more trouble than he is worth, and at this point, the Browns need to cut their losses and not bring him back. This is Gordon’s last year under contract with the Browns, and it’s time we got rid of him.
One of the big reasons to cut Gordon is because of another player on the Browns with a sketchy record; Johnny Manziel. Manziel is well known for his party boy-lifestyle, and was even suspended from the last game of the season for missing practice because he was out partying. And he was partying with (who else) Josh Gordon. You have to keep Gordon and Manziel away from each other, because Gordon could very easily become a bad influence on Manziel. Manziel has checked himself into rehab this offseason, so dropping Gordon would be a great way of keeping the supposed “future” (you can’t tell, but I air quoted so hard when I typed that) of our team in check.
Another reason to cut Gordon is that we have another receiver who could very easily replace him, and that’s Andrew Hawkins. In 2014, Hawkins was forced to step in for the missing Gordon, and he filled the role perfectly. He led the Browns in catches and yards, with 63 receptions and 834 yards, and also caught two touchdowns. He stepped in and quickly became the Browns top receiver. With Gordon gone for a year and Jordan Cameron leaving the Browns for the Miami Dolphins, Hawkins will undoubtly be the top guy this season once again. We shouldn’t invest more time in an unstable player like Gordon, when we have a guy who very easily replaces him.
There is, however, one big downside to releasing Gordon, and it’s a big one. He is just that dang good. He is the best receiver the Browns have, and is the best one we have had in a while. He is a Pro-bowler, he has set Cleveland Browns records, and he has set NFL records. Losing him would be losing a huge part of our offense. However, unless he can get his life straightened out during his year off, I don’t think we have a choice.
