On January 8, the Rangers bounced back from a tough loss at Madison High School to defeat the Riverside Beavers, 61-55. Boy, this might’ve been one of the most exciting games for North this year. Sophomore Brandon Barron lit up the court , leading North with 25 points. 25 points for game as sophomore is mighty impressive, especially for a shooting guard. Barron may most definitely be big next year. A strong point guard is exactly what North will need, losing senior Travis Picquet, along with a lot of other talent. Riverside may have brought out the best in the players. They played with fluidity and as a team. If only they could apply that same style to every other game, they would set.
The Rangers are now 6-3 and it’s time to step up their game. Sometimes a fourth period rally like the one at Riverside just isn’t good enough. Game speed may be a big problem, seeing as they have tall Kyle Andrewscik and strong Chris Province to work the paint. Now, the Rangers may be throwing speed on one guys’ shoulders, Travis Picquet. Sadly, Picquet may be one of the only guys on the team who can go on a fast break and conduct it with discipline. But it’s barely halfway through the season yet, they can still make the simple adjustments.
Right now, North has their hands full trying to prepare for their rival game on their home court against Willoughby South on January 12. Unlike last week, the Rebels are definitely a beatable team this year. Not like North got blown out last year by any means. Each of the two games played between the two have been thrilling and exciting, although resulting in a South win.
Eastlake must prove that it’s not a lost season, and next week against South will be the perfect chance.
