G0:0D AM: An Album Review
By: Adam South
Wake up! Have you not already listened to Mac Miller’s new album GO:OD AM? Mac Miller, notorious Pittsburgh rapper, released his 3rd studio album with a track listing of 17 songs. This album has a strange feature listing including Ab-Soul, Lil B, Miguel, Chief Keef and Little Dragon.
Miller’s other recent projects like Faces & Watching Movies with the Sound Off came off with an overall really gloomy moody sound & most songs struck to this overall depressed theme. However on his newest release Mac comes off with many smooth, melodic, almost intoxicating melodies with some catchy hooks. Andrew Gretchko of HipHopDX said, "If Miller’s sophomore album was a stepping stone that allowed him to climb above his partying past, GO:OD AM serves as a wakeup call for those that think his music is still best suited for frat parties. With a bright future ahead of him, Miller has positioned himself for career longevity, so long as he can keep his demons behind him.”
Another favorable factor for Mac on his newest LP is many contributions from reputable producers such as Thundercat, Tyler the Creator, & lots of work with ID Labs. Myself being a long term Mac fan am really proud of himself maturing musically but also lyrically. With lots of hilarious punch lines but also hard hitting deep bars about himself & his demons, it’s hard to not come away from this album without a positive response. One major downfall of this album, in my opinion, mac’s vocals in the latter half of album are a little whiney and have a really forced kind of sound to them. However in retrospect it is really good to see him trying to break the regular old mold for hip hop song today. In the song, When in Rome, Miller boldly states that, “I’m at the top of my game!” and it is hard to say he isn’t.
