Superhero movies have changed so much over the years. If you were to watch the original Superman
and Man
of Steel back to back, you’d notice how different they are. Where the
1978 film is very colorful, fun, and (let’s be honest) a little cheesy, the
2013 film is more serious, has darker color schemes and has more action. The
serious tone has actually become somewhat of a staple in superhero movies now a
days, which turns the film into more of a drama. This takes some of the fun out
of the movie since everything has to be taken so seriously. That being said,
thank god for Guardians of the Galaxy. And I mean that 100%, it felt great to
see a superhero movie not be so serious and just have fun with itself. What
results is an incredibly fun, action packed, laugh-out loud movie that everyone
should see.
Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), or as he calls himself “Star-Lord”, is an intergalactic smuggler who steals a powerful orb for his boss Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker), but instead decides to sell the orb. While trying to sell it, he is attacked by Gamora (Zoe Saldana), an assassin sent after Quill by Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), who also wants the orb. Quill is also attacked by two bounty hunters, a genetically engineered raccoon named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and a tree like creature named Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), who want to capture him to collect the bounty put on him by Yondu. The four of them are all arrested and taken to an intergalactic prison called the Kyln. There, they meet Drax (Dave Bautista), who wants revenge on Ronan for killing his family. After the five escape, the group decides to work together to get the orb to the Nova Corps on Xander and defeat Ronan
Like I said, this movie is absolutely hilarious. Every joke hits its mark, or at least gets a laugh out of everyone. Characters like Rocket, Quill, and Drax are all hilarious in their own way throughout the entire movie. Especially Drax, who’s incredibly dry sense of humor causes him to say some of the best one-liners in the movie.
Accompanying the comedy was some great action scenes. The fights were performed great, with the action staying fast-paced and never slowing down once it got started. Every character is cast perfectly, and I was especially surprised by how good Dave Bautista was. Some of you probably know him for his work in WWE, where he wasn’t exactly known for his acting skills. However, he does great. His lines were well delivered, they didn’t sound forced, and he was actually really funny. The special effects and make-up all look great. I really like the way Groot is designed, and Drax’s makeup looks really good.
To make it short, I love this movie, and seems like the majority of people like it to. Critics loved it (92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), fans love it (95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from audience reviews), it seems like everyone loves this movie. And I can’t blame them. This is without a doubt my new favorite Marvel movie and is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. James Gunn, the film’s director and writer, has already signed on to make the sequel, along with Chris Pratt, and it currently has a 2017 release listed on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a movie I heavily recommend seeing, no matter who you are. It has comedy, it has action, it has drama, it has Andy Dwyer, what more could you ask for? To finish this off, thank you James Gunn, for making the most enjoyable superhero movie since The Avengers.
