ST. EDWARD'S EARLY THANKSGIVING FEAST: MENTOR
By: Mollee Ryan
Things played out a little differently than the Mentor Cardinals thought it would.
Actually, a lot different.
The Eagles ended a two-game losing streak to Mentor in the playoffs on November 14 at Parma Byers Field. It was amazing; for St. Edward at least. The Eagles led Mentor the whole game, defeating them in the second round of the playoffs 34-10. Mentor’s Jason Blizzard finished the season with 70 catches for 1,330 yards, but on Saturday he was held to 3 catches and 29 yards. The only touchdown for Mentor was scored by a pass from Tadas Tatarunas to Alex Matthews in the second quarter.
On the flipside, the Eagles’ Cole Gest flipped on the beast mode against Mentor. Good luck trying to stop him, he has 18 touchdowns and 1,719 yards this season alone. He could even break last years’ record of 25 touchdowns and 1,854 rushing yards. The kid is a monster.
“I was kinda struggling in the first half with my wind, but they were talking a lot of smack and that really fueled my energy and that’s why I went into beast mode in the second half.” Cole Gest says.
It all goes back to the humble pie.
A nice big slice of humble pie is definitely a good thing for good teams to chew on, as I said at the beginning of football season. A word to the smack talkers; if you make the decision to “talk smack” make sure you have the talent to back it up, because if not, simply remember what was handed won in Cincinnati and Parma this season,.
That will be sure to keep you humble.
