Piscalko is the newest addition to the math department here at North this year.
Ms. Piscalko went to Grove City College in Pennsylvania and pursued her degree
in math grades 7-12 then went on to become a long-term substitute at a career
center in Maplewood.
She says that she’s really enjoyed working here so far and has no major complaints. She notes especially that the students have been very respectful toward her and the teachers and faculty are always supportive and helpful, it being her first year. Ms. Piscalko says that she really likes that the building has a lot of character to it. The high school that she went to was very jail-like and sterile, so she enjoys the fact that North is not that way.
Ms. Piscalko likes to run in her free time and is actually running her first half marathon this fall. In addition to that, she also loves reading and planning for her wedding, which will take place next summer. Her favorite book is a mystery novel, Six Years by her favorite author, Harlan Coban.
When she was growing up, Ms. Piscalko always wanted to be a teacher. She says that her friends would describe her as very smiley and also quiet at first. She says that she always tries to be bubbly when people first meet her.
Ms. Piscalko would describe herself as an optimist because she thinks that it is better to have that mindset and when you think this way things seem to work better in your favor. “As a teacher,” She says, “It is especially important because you have to believe that all kids will succeed. I try to believe all kids are innocent at first, it’s a good policy to live by.”
