50,000 wORDS IN A MONTH?!
BY: MEGHAN SENIK
National Novel Writing Month (Nanowrimo) is in November. Like the title says, it’s a month dedicated to writing novels, which means it’s a busy time for all writers that know about it.
For most people, being able to write a novel in a month is practically impossible, but that’s why the “Nanowrimo” website was set up. Nanowrimo.org helps motivate writers and gives them an outlet to start writing (or maybe even finish) a novel. By supplying an outlet to track your progress and obtain support from other writers it helps influence you to get to work.
Writer’s block? Not a problem. The goal that you are hoped to achieve by the end of the month is 50,000 words, but the program provides several services to help with that. Services like determining your region to meet up with other authors or providing pep talks when you start to fall behind or run low on ideas.
When it was set up though, it was decided that the sites slogan should be: No Plot? No Problem! This is because the main focus is to just to get people to start writing a rough draft, and edit it later on.
Even if you’re a little too late to join on the fun this year, you can still participate in future years. The internet-based creative writing project has been an annual thing, since 1999. When Chris Baty started it in 1999 though, it was quite small and had only 21 participants. After gaining a website and some publicity though, it grew, and writers from all over the world participate now. It was estimated that in 2013 over 400,000 people participated.
If you’re interested in participating next year you can find more information on their website (nanowrimo.org), or at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Novel_Writing_Month.
