The Eastlake North Rangers fell to the Mayfield Wildcats in Week 9 of high school football. It was a brutal slap in the face to the Rangers as they took the loss, 49-20. Too bad for North, they have no chance in the playoffs now. Many were hoping that before double-threat quarterback Zane Bunnell leaves next year, he would lead the team to the playoffs. Sadly, they were mistaken.
“Mayfield was just fast. The defense really couldn’t hold them.” Sophomore punt returner Kenny Streb said.
Eastlake North is definitely a prideful school. No matter how much they win, lose, the school is so happy. The student sections are always loud and many fans attend the games. North football is still a big thing and there is always the hope that someday, they will be good enough to make the playoffs. For example, even though they haven’t beaten their rival, Willoughby South, in twelve consecutive years, it is still rated one of the biggest rivalries in Northeast Ohio. It really is sad that this team couldn’t come out and show some football.
That was the last time.
The last time that the seniors of this school would play on their home field. The last time they would dress in those distinct orange and black jerseys. The last time they would sing the Alma Mater with the marching band and student section in their own stands. The last time they would break through the tunnel, bursting with excitement with the crowd.
And it ended with a lousy mercy-rule, beat-up game from an outstanding group of Wildcats.
