On September 1st, the Cleveland Browns released defensive tackle Phil Taylor. Promised
$5.4 million this season, this release came to quite a surprise to Cleveland fans. Taylor finished
his career with the browns with 108 tackles, 23 assists, and 7 sacks.
“Just given the current circumstances of us needing to trim the roster down and where he was
and how we felt about the room, we just felt it was the right decision for all involved.” Coach
Mike Pettine says after the release.
Taylor missed most of offseason recovering from his knee surgery. Mike Pettine was
unsure how he would play inside the gate because of all that he missed. Of course, Phil Taylor
had been a huge impact on the Browns, especially when it came to stopping the run. In fact, the
Browns would probably still have him on the roster if they weren’t so sure about their rookie
first round nose tackle Danny Shelton. But with no time wasted, there is no doubt Taylor will be
picked up by another team soon enough.
Phil Taylor will always remember his career with the Cleveland Browns as when he was
released he posted on Twitter:
“The fans are what makes Cleveland, Cleveland! Gonna miss you guys!! #AlwaysADawg
#GodhasAPlanForEveryone”
