End of Summer
By: Rob Munera
There was once a boy
Who loved a girl very much
But she never knew
Every day
He’d think of her-
Every morning when he awoke
And every night when he’d sleep
The boy was very shy, alas
And was afraid to tell her.
Whenever he saw her,
His cheeks would turn red
And he would turn away
To shield himself from her view
The girl,
Although the boy didn’t know,
Loved him too
Occasionally,
When he would write poetry in the park
And leave for water,
He’d leave his notebook sitting on the bench
And the girl would read the poem that he’d been writing.
The poems he wrote
Told such wonderful, moving stories
About his love for her.
At the top of the page
It read, “Poeme D’amour” by Rob Munera
She stood in awe
As her eyes scrolled down the page.
Theboy had a way with words
No other boy could match.
Every night, before he slept
He would read a part from his poetry
The boy loved her so much,
And the girl loved him.
But a problem arose…
The girl was with another
She was caught
In-between two loves.
And the girl knew not what to do.
The boy who had been writing the poems
She knew,
Is a caring, gentle person.
And would treat her like a princess.
But the other boy,
She knew,
Had so much more in common.
Eventually,
She made a decision…
One such decision
She would regret.
One such decision
She couldn’t live with.
As the boy,
Sitting on the bench writing,
She came.
Without noticing her, he continued.
On the page
It read,
“I shall tell her today.”
Then the boy looked up
To see the girl
Standing in front of him.
He stood,
And prepared to say-
“I don’t love you.” The girl said,
Cutting the boy off.
Then it was quiet.
And nothing was heard but the wind.
On her face it showed-
The mistake she made.
She loved him so much
But her choices sealed both their lives.
The boy looked down
At the grass and his feet
Wondering what words she could say next.
What else will she break? He questioned himself.
The girl put her hand on his shoulder
And tried to explain,
But the boy wouldn’t listen.
He didn’t care.
All she would say, he thought,
Were all lies.
Then he ran
Leaving the girl standing alone
By herself wallowing in sorrow
The boy hurried to his car
With tears running down his face
On the streets,
He sped
Holding regrets in his heart
Of ever loving her.
He sped up even more,
Hoping to get away from his feelings.
Days later-
The girl sat on the park bench
Where she broke the boy’s heart.
A man,
Wearing a black suit
Held a letter
Addressed to the girl.
After holding it for a moment
She opened it and read the letter.
As her eyes moving down the paper,
A single tear dripped down her face.
She dropped the letter
And it fell into a puddle.
It began to rain.
The letter explained,
The boy, heartbroken,
Crashed his car as he was speeding
And died on impact.
The grave yard
Where he laid,
Is empty and cold
The girl stood
At her former lover’s tomb
And cried, saying how sorry she was
She regretted everything.
She cannot overcome her mistakes
And she wishes she could take it all back.
The only person
Who truly loved her,
Is gone.
And she can’t get him back.
Her love is gone,
And she blamed herself entirely.
The summer ended.
The fall is coming soon,
And she can feel it here now-
The cold, loneliness of winter.
Each day, she suffers the loss
At her own hand
Of her mistake
Now, she has no one
She is left alone by her friends and family.
Each day, now,
All she does
Is lay in bed.
She rarely eats; rarely sleeps.
Weeks have passed
Since the boy’s departure
And the girl,
She cannot bear life without him any longer.
There is but two more choices she has to make…
She knows each one so well,
And perhaps,
She made one last mistake…
The girl grabs a full pill bottle, water,
Paper and a pen.
Later that day,
The girl was discovered
Dead on her bed,
With an empty pill bottle in one hand
And a piece of paper in the other.
The page read,
Goodbye cruel world,
You’ve taken my love.
Now I shall take yours.
I’ve lost the boy
I loved
And I can never get him back.
I’ve left this world to go to the next
And join my love.
We discovered each other
In the beginning of summer,
And we won’t let it end.
