A facelift for north
By: Caylee Marino
Students have returned from their summer vacation to a
“brand newish” school. Improvements to the old commons, now known as the
student center, provide a new and more secure center for the high school. The
cafeteria has been gifted with brand new windows and tables, that make lunch at
school more inviting. Almost every room and every hallway at North has had a
fresh coat of paint. The hallways bear a comfortable new carpeted floor and
uniform lockers, rather than the old mismatched ones. North has also restored
several features towards the athletics side such as an amazing weight room with
new equipment, new trophy cases, and a beautiful new entrance to our very own
Carter Stadium.
Eastlake North seems to be under appreciated and undervalued by surrounding schools, and even its own students. Even though North holds many talented and brilliant young adults, we get the reputation of being a lesser school. Could this be due to other schools having more modern facilities? Even our rival school Willoughby South has had innumerable restorations and updates. The 2014-2015 school year at North has been made to have a new outlook, but could the renovations be affecting the students? The faculty thinks yes.
Studies show that when you place a student in an environment in which they value, they will perform at a higher efficiency level. Many teachers are saying that they have noticed improvements in students’ work ethic and organization skills, especially in the seniors who are very grateful for the much needed improvements to their school. The school monitors and custodial staff have also said that the students are learning to have better respect for their school, showing less vandalism and more effort to clean up after themselves.
The staff members of North are also very grateful for the additions to the school. Too often do we forget that the people who teach us chose this job as their career, and not only is it our school but it is their place of work. After the beginning chaos of unfinished projects, and the starting of the new school year, teachers got comfortable with the new school. They show their value by enforcing the rules provided, to keep North looking fresh and enjoyable.
In the years to come I hope North sees many more new additions. I look forward to moving on through senior year and enjoying a new environment to finish out high school. I hope the new students, now and in the future, show their value and love for their school.
