The pain for Eastlake North fans never stops, does it?
The start to the 2016 North basketball season is definitely not as everyone expected, or wanted it to. Eastlake North began their season 0-1, with a grudging 38-53 loss to powerful West Geauga. The game was played in Chesterland, so of course you’re going to be jittery the first game of the season at an unfamiliar school. One loss didn’t have to determine the season. A week later, North crushed Max Hayes under their feet 53-23 at home. The Rangers had no problem moving the ball and putting the ball through the hoop. Kyle Andrewscik was a monster that night, leading the team with 18 points, along with Travis Picquet assisting with 12 points.
North was 1-1 by this time, but took another loss as they traveled to Youngstown Ursuline, falling to the Fighting Irish. Sadly, the Rangers just couldn’t put up enough points against the athletic, fast-paced team, with their efforts falling just short. But they came back once again with a furious win at home, defeating the Edgewood Warriors 57-50. By the looks of their record, North definitely felt much better performing on their home court, as do most teams. Fans got excited. North was 2-1 and even though it was the beginning of the season, they seemed to have some chemistry happening. Especially between senior point guard Travis Picquet and sophomore Kyle Andrewscik. They were able to make a 3- point shot when it was needed as well, mostly from Brandon Barron or Brandon Robinson.
Disappointingly, the Rangers fell hard the next three games. The first loss was a t home against John Marshall. It was not a bad loss, the boys played hard and there was just nothing more they could do. John Marshall accounted for good inside defense, which might’ve been North’s weakness. The second loss was against the Kenston Bombers, in which was not as pleasant as everyone would’ve wanted it. This aggressive loss smacked everyone in the face as the North was blown away 64-32. Something that Eastlake does not have is height, and this year Kenston relies on their height. The Bombers will definitely have a promising next few seasons with some of their tall sophomores. And lastly, Eastlake fell to Collinwood, 54-50. Being honest with this one, North should have never lost. They had the lead most of the times in the game and sadly they fell just short. All they had to do was keep their head in the game and win this one, but sadly they couldn’t. Too bad it was a much needed win as well. North finished their December games with 2-4 record.
Hopefully the month of January will be full of much exciting basketball.
