The film “Room,” based on the novel by Emma Donoghue, is about a woman (Brie Larson) who had been held captive for years in an enclosed space after being kidnapped. In these years she was treated harshly and due to that she had a child named Jack (Jacob Tremblay). After five years the two find their freedom allowing Jack to experience and adapt to the outside world.
The movie received an amazing response from viewers. According to The Guardian, “{It was} A heartfelt, Golden Globe-winning performance which powers this gripping drama about a mother and son imprisoned by a psychotic abuser.” Another critic adds “A suspenseful and heartrending drama that finds perhaps the most extreme possible metaphor for how time, regret and the end of childhood can make unknowing captives of us all”(Variety). The film and the actors/actresses have accumulated ten awards from all over the world. Some awards include the Academy Award for best actress, British independent film award, and both Tremblay and Larson won Critics choice awards.
I truly enjoyed the film. The actors and actresses in the movie did an amazing job. Jacob Trembley is only nine years old and preformed as if he’s been acting longer than he’s lived. He did an amazing job of portraying his character as well as Brie Larson. She has done many films, most of them being comedy, so this film was definitely a different craft for her and she definitely delivered. The movie was very detailed and specific which is something I loved. They took the time to show them adapting to life after the captivity.
This is surely a must watch for those who enjoy indie drama films. The film is rated R for mature scenes and language.
