Spring Cleaning and Redecorating
By: Madeline Patrick
Is the newly warm weather getting you into a cleaning mood? Here are some tips that will make your room sparkle.
Start by cleaning out your closet. Make two piles: donate and keep. Donate the clothes you no longer want to the Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Easter seals, and then put the winter clothes you’re keeping away. Take out your spring clothes and donate the ones you don’t want or that don’t fit.
Wash your bedspread and sheets and change them to a lighter material. It is spring so the weather is warming up and you don’t want to be too hot. The new bedspread could also bring a new spring feel to your room.
Use Windex or a glass cleaner to clean your windows and mirror. Dust the wooden surfaces and vacuum your carpet or mop the floor. Get organized as well by tidying up your bookshelf or cleaning out your drawers.
Redecorating isn’t as difficult as it sounds. You can change the curtains in your room or buy a few new throw pillows. Getting a small fish tank that can be decorated with an aquatic plant (or a fish) can also give a natural feel to your room. A new spring candle can keep your room smelling great and get you in the mood for warm weather. You could also buy a plain wood and cork bulletin board and decorate it to your liking by painting the wood border and gluing a fabric to the cork. This project can cost around $20.
One great way to personalize your room is to make a collage. Collect a few old magazines or newspapers. Cut out things that you like, such as, your favorite sports team, a fashion brand, favorite CD cover, or a picture of you and your friends. Place all the photos onto a piece of poster board and when you like the way they look glue them down with hot glue, Elmer’s, or Mod Podge ( if you use Mod Podge you can glue over the pictures for a glossy finish). After you glue you can leave it like that or put it in a huge frame and hang it up in your room. This whole project costs about $15.
Now that your room is spotless and personalized you can chill out in there or go enjoy the warm weather and the beauty nature has to offer. If you do the bulletin board or collage projects, submit it to the searchlight by twitter @tsearchlight or by email at [email protected] and it could be shown on the website at http://thesearchlight.weebly.com/.
